The Dry Eye Treatment That Isn’t a Drop

Two women are sitting in chairs in an office, one is smiling and looking at the other, who is holding a book, a potted plant and a cup are on the table in front of them, a woman is standing behind the counter, a signboard and a desk are in the corner of the room.

If your eyes feel gritty again soon after you use drops, you may wonder what else could help. Drops can add moisture, but dry eye disease has different causes. For some people, the problem involves the tiny oil-producing glands along the eyelids.

That is why a dry eye treatment at our Gahanna eye clinic always begins with a closer look at your tears and eyelids rather than handing you just another bottle of eye drops.

Our eye care team discusses further below.

Why Eye Drops May Not Be The Answer, and How IPL May Help

Tears need an oily outer layer to slow evaporation. The meibomian glands in your eyelids make that oil, so when they’re not working well—a condition called meibomian gland dysfunction—tears can dry up too quickly. Your eyes may burn, sting, water excessively, or feel tired. Vision can also fluctuate, especially during screen time or reading.

In many cases, eye drops can alleviate the symptoms, but won’t be able to clear the underlying condition. This is where Intense Pulsed Light Therapy comes in.

What Is IPL Therapy for Dry Eye?

Intense pulsed light therapy, or IPL, is an in-office treatment that delivers controlled pulses of light to the skin around the eyes. It may help reduce inflammation associated with meibomian gland dysfunction and improve the quality of the oil those glands release. A healthier oil layer can help tears remain on the eyes longer.

IPL therapy for dry eye is an option to discuss when symptoms persist and an exam points to gland dysfunction. It does not replace every form of dry eye care, and results vary. Your eye doctor may recommend other measures alongside it, depending on your symptoms and exam findings.

What Happens Before and During Treatment?

First, your eye doctor needs to understand why your eyes feel dry. During your comprehensive eye exam, you should share with us when symptoms occur, how often you use drops, and whether contacts or screen time make discomfort worse. Your optometrist can assess your tear film, eyelids, and overall eye health before discussing whether IPL fits your care plan.

During IPL treatment, protective eye shields are used while light is applied around the eyes. The practice describes a typical course as three to four brief visits spaced a few weeks apart. Your doctor can explain the recommended schedule, what treatment may feel like, and when to check your progress. Some people need ongoing care to manage chronic dry eye.

Could an In-Office Treatment Be Right for You?

You do not have to decide whether you need IPL on your own. If you keep reaching for drops, wake with irritated eyes, or struggle with discomfort throughout the day, an evaluation can help identify the cause. Chronic dry eye treatment may include changes to your daily routine, drops, eyelid care, in-office therapy, or a combination.
